Arts and global studies are core parts of the basic curriculum and are thoughtfully integrated into daily classroom instruction, providing students with multi-faceted learning experiences.There are broad ranges of academic and arts enrichment activities that include project based and hands on learning, presentations, and cultural studies.Students adopt partnerships with schools in other countries through global networking, problem solving, and critical thinking.International guests, visiting artists, and guest performers share their expertise through enrichment activities. As a result, Diggs-LathamElementaryMagnet School produces international-minded students who are inquirers, knowledgeable, caring, and sensitive to points of view of people around the world.
Through independent study and collaborative learning, students make global connections by examining the historical perspectives of diverse cultures, investigating the geographical relations between cultures, researching the economics and development of diverse nations, examining technological influences, and comparing and contrasting government and citizenship.Students explore and appreciate the art forms of diverse cultures. Students engage in conversations about global issues and work collaboratively to develop an understanding of other nations and cultures.Students are engaged in activities and projects that broaden their perspective of the world around them.Students participate in conversations that help them understand the local and global implications of civic decisions. Students learn innovation skills that prepare them to think creatively, work creatively with others, and implement innovations.Students elaborate, refine, analyze, and evaluate their own ideas in order to improve and maximize creative efforts. Through these studies, students develop a greater understanding of their connections to the world and how the world connects to them.
The arts team at Diggs-LathamElementaryMagnet School provides direct instruction in visual art, choral music, dance, piano, music composition, band, orchestra, and theater arts. Students are encouraged to showcase their talents and abilities in these art forms through performances, exhibitions, publications, projects, and service. Students use their innovative abilities and talents to demonstrate what they learn in core and arts classes. Our technology at Diggs-Latham is first class. We have a 21st Century Media Center and computer lab. Not only do we have the benefit of having merged two library collections, but we have a staff that takes our children outside the box by engaging them in projects that involve blogging, glogging, podcasting and using green screen technology.
Children are exposed to a vast array of activities that enhance their ability to succeed through their talents and ability to adapt to a changing world.Throughout the day, students are engaged in healthy conversations and activities that enable them to think globally and creatively.Students are encouraged to develop innovative solutions to problems by analyzing, applying, synthesizing, and evaluating their solutions and decisions. Through such study, students develop an appreciation and respect for their community, themselves, and the world.Students are encouraged to communicate new ideas and thoughts, to be open and responsive to new and diverse perspectives, and willing to share and brainstorm ideas with children from other nations and cultures. Students are expected to apply media skills when communicating with children from other nations through podcasting, wikis, emails, etc.Students are expected to be self-directed learners, to be able to work independently at times, and to be able to work and interact effectively with others.Diggs-LathamElementaryMagnet School students are expected to be able to lead and guide others and to demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior. We encourage our students to be examples for others to follow.
Diggs-LathamElementaryMagnet School for Arts & Global Studies is located in historic West Salem neighborhood shared by the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, SalemAcademy and College, and Winston-Salem State University-schools well known for their arts, global studies, and applied technology programs.
